Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Often referred to as “the second rape”, secondary victimization concerns the negative interaction of crime victims with the Judicial System and Criminal Police Organisms. The present study explored the perceptions and knowledge of the Portuguese Justice System and Criminal Police professionals regarding secondary victimization in cases of rape and child sexual abuse. For this purpose, an online open-ended questionnaire was developed to explore the participants' knowledge. The distribution of the questionnaire was carried via a network of contacts, Portuguese law courts, police stations, and social networks such as Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. The inclusion criteria consisted of the participant's profession, given that the participant had to obligatorily belong to the Portuguese Criminal Police Organisms or to the Portuguese Judicial System. The results showed that, regardless of some visible inaccuracies, the participants had a considerably good amount of knowledge concerning the dynamics of secondary victimization, and its role in the judicial system.
