Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Internalized homophobia causes adverse consequences in LGBQ+ people’s lives, both at an individual level and in their romantic relationships, possibly leading to breakups. These separations prove to be complex processes, causing various levels of suffering, to which psychological adjustment is necessary. The present study focuses on understanding the consequences of internalized homophobia on post-separation psychological adjustment’s capacity, questioning whether the establishment and maintenance of an attachment style in adulthood can mitigate or exacerbate them. For this purpose, 170 individuals answered to a questionnaire, with measures of the levels of internalized homophobia, measures of the levels of psychological adjustment to separation of the most significant relationship and a measure evaluating the attachment style, obtained through correlations analysis and a simple moderation model. Results suggest a strong positive correlation between internalized homophobia and psychological adjustment to separation. This relationship is moderated by attachment style. These results also propose that individuals with an insecure attachment style experience higher levels of both internalized homophobia and psychological adjustment. In conclusion, the present study suggests that the influence of internalized homophobia on post-separation psychological adjustment capacity depends, among other things, on the established attachment style.
