Abstract(s)
There is no literature on cultural life scripts and life history events in a sample of migrants. In this sense, the objective of this study was to characterize the life scripts in a sample of emigrants in Portugal, and to verify if the relationships between cultural life scripts with life satisfaction, attachment, depression symptomatology and anxiety found in other studies are maintained. A sample of 106 emigrants was collected in Portugal, aged between 18 and 57 years. The following questionnaires were used: Sociodemographic questionnaire, Life Script Events Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Young Scheme Questionnaire, Adult Attachment Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Satisfaction with Life Scale. The most frequent life scripts in the present sample were Education/School, Marriage/Dating, Personal Growth/Development, Work, and civic-religious roles, all of which are of positive emotional valence. The most frequent negative emotional valence life scripts were Death and Sickness. The scripts showed to be independent of the time of residence in the country, however, there are differences in the age groups and they are independent of the level of depression, levels of state and trace anxiety and levels of satisfaction with life. It can be concluded that emigrants seem, in general, not to diverge at the level of life scripts compared to non-migrant populations, which may indicate that with the globalization that the current society experiences it is possible that the experiences become more common between different Countries.
