Abstract(s)
The COVID-19 pandemic and all the associated changes brought about needs that had to be implemented quickly. It was imperative to improve online therapy services in order to continue to provide therapeutic support. More than maintaining the sessions, it was necessary to guarantee their quality and ensure that the therapists were prepared, since most of them have little training or experience in this modality. Objectives: 1) To understand whether Perceived Difficulties in an online context and Cognitive Flexibility of therapists are predictors of Therapeutic Presence; 2) Check if there are differences between therapists who were already familiar with online therapy vs. those who have recently started this practice; 3) Check if there are differences in the variables under study, taking into account the therapist's theoretical model. Method: The sample consists of psychologists and psychotherapists who practice online therapy (N=692), aged between 22 and 77 years. Data collection took place entirely online. Results: The results show that both the Perceived Difficulties and the Cognitive Flexibility of the therapist influence the values of Therapeutic Presence, however, the Cognitive Flexibility is more prominent. Furthermore, there are no significant differences between therapists who already used online formats and those who did not use this resource, neither in terms of Perceived Difficulties nor in terms of Cognitive Flexibility. As for the theoretical models, the results indicate that there are differences. Conclusion: Cognitive Flexibility and Perceived Difficulties in an online context influence Therapeutic Presence, both in Portuguese and foreign therapists.
