Abstract(s)
A amostra
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of identity and identification with the family within the relationship between family functioning (FF) and deliberate self-harm diversity (DIV). We compared adolescents with and without a history of deliberate self-harm (DSH) regarding their FF (cohesion, flexibility and communication), level of identification with their family and identity development. We analysed the relationships between variables and if the identity development dimensions and identification with the family were mediators of the relationship between FF and DIV. Our sample consisted of 443 adolescents aged between 12 and 21 years (M= 15.18, DP= 1.86), who completed self-report questionnaires that assessed the variables mentioned above. Participants with a history of DSH showed levels that indicated an unbalanced FF, and lower levels of identification with the family and regarding the adaptative dimensions of identity development. FF was positively associated with identity development and identification with the family, and negatively associated with DIV. Identification with the family was positively associated with the adaptative dimensions of identity development and negatively associated with DIV. Finally, we highlight the relevance of identification in the relationship between FF and DIV since, within identity, identification with commitment was a (partial) mediator of this relationship, and identification with the family partially mediated the relationship between cohesion / communication and DIV, and fully mediated the relationship between flexibility and DIV.
