Abstract(s)
Although there is a gap between research and practice in psychotherapy, not much is known about this dynamic in Portugal. We surveyed 155 psychotherapists based in Portugal in order to evaluate the impact of empirical research findings in clinical practice. On the one hand the results suggest that clinicians are eclectic in regard to their theoretical framework; several reported that they include research elements in their clinical practice. Nevertheless, psychotherapists have argued that empirical investigation is not as useful when compared to other sources of information, such as ongoing experience with clients. On the other hand, therapists with a cognitive-behavioural background have shown themselves to be more influenced with sources of information related to empirical research in comparison to psychodynamic therapists. The results and the consequent implications of this investigation are discussed with respect to various dimensions that include the nature of the epistemological bases of the theoretical frameworks. In order to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice in Portugal more investigations of this nature must be conducted. With contributions and efforts this growing body of literature and investigation will provide a solid background as well as valuable experience that will ultimately shorten the rift between clinical practice and empirical investigation.
