Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The good conflict management in the workplace, for example, helps the team run smoothly, and personality can influence this phenomenon. The Dark Triad theory has been the subject of investigation lately and an opposing theory, the Light Triad theory, has recently emerged. Taking that to account, it’s important to understand how these personality theories influence the strategies used in conflict resolution. This study therefore aims to understand how Dark Triad and Light Triad personality traits predict the conflict management style chosen in the workplace and to observe the differences between the two personality theories and its preferences in the chosen conflict management styles. In order to study this phenomenon, we collected 224 participants who answered a questionnaire with instruments to measure the level of dark personality traits, level of light personality traits and to determine the most commonly used conflict management styles. The results showed that high levels of dark traits, generally, predicts the choice of domination as conflict management style and high levels of light traits predicts the choice of other styles. Additionally, it was found that high levels of narcissistic traits predicts an avoidant attitude in conflicts. This research has shown that it is important to understand how the dark and light personality influences conflict management in the workplace in order to ensure that conflicts are resolved appropriately. In addition, this study increased the theoretical knowledge of the two theories and their relationship in the portuguese population.
