Abstract(s)
Não-Verbal; Repertório da Afetividade do Cliente; Grupo enquanto Sistema Terapêutico;
ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to understand the effectiveness of music therapy in dementia. Music therapy is a non-pharmacological strategy that uses music as a way of accessing memories by activating neurological, emotional and sensory processes, as well as contributing to greater general well-being. Although the effectiveness of music therapy in this population is recognized, there are few studies that explore the role of this intervention from the perspective of music therapists. This research is carried out in order to add value and knowledge to the existing literature, focusing on the experience of music therapists in contact with people with dementia, with the aim of understanding the benefits associated with music therapy and its role in revitalizing identity and making new stories in this population. Eight music therapists were selected, with different backgrounds and ages ranging from 24 to 59, with experience in working with elderly people with dementia. Semi-structured interviews were carried out via zoom, lasting an average of one hour, as a way of obtaining information about their personal and professional experience of working with people with dementia. Thematic analysis was then used, which enabled various themes to emerge, such as: Music Therapy as a Non-Verbal Expressive Mediator; the Client's Affective Repertoire; the Group as a Therapeutic System; Music Therapy Benefits and Identity Recovery. This study was based on the guidelines determined by the institution's ethics committee and informed consent was obtained from all participants, as well as sociodemographic data. The data obtained reinforces the applicability and effectiveness of music therapy intervention in individuals diagnosed with dementia, agreeing with the information previously obtained in the literature and adding value on relevant issues for the scientific community, the Music Therapy Association and music therapists.
