Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The proliferation of communication technologies and the popularity of social networking sites imply that they are increasingly present in our daily lives, serving as mediators in interpersonal relationships. Some studies point to the existence of the social gains and reduction of loneliness with the use of social network sites, while others have reported negative effects on relationships, particularly between parents and children. Considering the importance that relationships have on the development of the adolescent, we intend to examine in this study what impact the frequency of internet usage, its social use and identification to Facebook have on loneliness and social support from peers and parents at this stage of life. Our results suggest that the frequency of internet use is positively and significantly correlated with social support from peers, and also significantly and negatively correlated with loneliness. However, we did not find significant correlations between social use of the Internet or identification to Facebook, and loneliness or social support, from peers or parents.
