Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Although the refuge experience can be potentially traumatic and associated with significant distress, studies suggest that it can also lead to positive psychological adjustment. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to analyze the processes of meaningmaking after trauma and post-migration cognitive reappraisals, following Park's Meaning-Making Model (2010), in Eritrean refugees. Six refugees, recently resettled in Portugal and living in the Lisbon region participated in two focus groups, held in 2018. Using thematic analysis, we identified three themes: “Powerlessness and lack of choice”, as a determinant factor in the decision to leave the country; “Faith, strength and hope: the consolation of religious beliefs”, which highlights the centrality of religion during the trajectories of cognitive processing; and “Disruption of expectations about life in Europe", referring to the stressors faced in the post-migration period, and sub-theme “Hope in a re-imagined future”, as an indicator of positive cognitive reappraisals. The results suggest the disruption of goals as a determinant of significant distress in refugee populations, the stability of religious beliefs in the processes of making meaning of trauma, as well as perspectives of subjective and spiritual well-being.
