- Risk factors of the Intestinal parasites Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. in marine mammalsPublication . Almeida, Sofia Isabel Martins; Grilo, MiguelA study of two intestinal parasites, Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp., was done with several marine mammal species around the globe. To understand whether there are risk factors that increase the probability of contracting infection by these two parasites in these animals. Since these parasites have zoonotic characteristics, this information can later be used to prevent issues in the well-being and conservation of these species. In this study, a bibliographical review of all studies on Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. was carried out in all species of wild marine mammals that were described in the literature as well as information provided directly by authors who studied it. Therefore, 55 studies were reviewed, in which 55 species were collected and 4558 individuals studied. Of these individuals, 412 tested positive for Giardia spp. and 258 tested positive for Cryptosporidium spp.. Eight risk factors were considered, such as species, family, habitat, geographic distribution, the condition in which the animals were sampled, the year and season. When statistically analysing the results, it was concluded that although the two intestinal parasites have an association between them, each risk factor relates to each parasite in a different way.
