Abstract(s)
Problema: Investigação tem vindo a demonstrar que as experiências precoces em torno das
emoções determinam a qualidade das competências de regulação emocional, no entanto, o
impacto destas experiências na formação de uma identidade não foi até então objeto de estudo.
Objetivo: Tendo em conta o papel fundamental da regulação emocional no desenvolvimento
de uma identidade, este estudo pretende investigar se a relação entre experiências de validação
emocional parental e desenvolvimento da identidade é mediada por competências de regulação
emocional. Método: Numa amostra comunitária de 304 portugueses foi avaliada a qualidade
das experiências de socialização emocional na infância e adolescência, a capacidade de
regulação emocional e a dimensão de desenvolvimento da identidade a que estão propensos.
Foi analisado um modelo de mediação, de forma a perceber se a regulação emocional medeia
a relação entre experiências de validação emocional e desenvolvimento da identidade.
Resultados: Os resultados evidenciam que experiências de validação emocional estão
negativamente associadas a dificuldades de regulação emocional. Demonstram também que
indivíduos que têm dificuldades de regulação emocional estão mais propensos a dimensões
disfuncionais do desenvolvimento de identidade (exploração ruminativa) e menos propensos a
dimensões normativas do desenvolvimento da identidade (exploração abrangente). Ainda, o
modelo de mediação revelou que, dificuldades de regulação emocional medeiam a relação entre
experiências de validação emocional e o desenvolvimento da identidade.
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Research has shown that early experiences around emotions determine the quality of emotional regulation skills, however, the impact of these experiences on identity formation has not been studied until now. Objective: Given the fundamental role of emotional regulation in identity development, this study aims to investigate whether the relationship between parental emotional validation experiences and identity development is mediated by emotional regulation skills. Method: In a community sample of 304 Portuguese, the quality of emotional socialization experiences in childhood and adolescence, emotional regulation skills and the dimension of identity development to which they are prone were assessed. A mediation model was analyzed in order to understand whether emotional regulation mediates the relationship between emotional validation experiences and identity development. Results: The results show that emotional validation experiences are negatively associated with emotional regulation difficulties. They also show that individuals who have emotional regulation difficulties are more prone to dysfunctional dimensions of identity development (ruminative exploration) and less prone to normative dimensions of identity development (breadth exploration). In addition, the mediation model revealed that emotional regulation difficulties mediate the relationship between emotional validation experiences and identity development.
