casal.
ABSTRACT:Introduction: There is a high prevalence of problems related to sexuality in women with breast cancer, which impact the woman and the couple. It was intended to evaluate the experience of sexuality after breast cancer from the perspective of the woman and the couple. Method: The present investigation used a mixed method. For the quantitative method, the sample consisted of 125 women (M = 46.45, SD = 9.68) diagnosed with breast cancer who answered questionnaires through the Qualtrics platform. For the qualitative study, 3 couples who also experienced breast cancer in women (M = 50.67, SD = 4.72) participated in semistructured interviews with a couple. Results: There was a significant correlation between sexual satisfaction and disease communication between couples, dyadic adjustment, and intimacy in the relationship. There was also a correlation between intimacy in the relationship and dyadic adjustment and female sexual functioning. From the qualitative analysis of the interviews with the couples, it was found that there was a strong impact of the disease on the experience of intimacy and sexuality; that the support and support of the partners were fundamental for a better management of the symptoms and for a better adjustment of the woman to the disease and, that the lack of support from the health professionals caused dissatisfaction in the couples. Conclusion: This study contributes to a better understanding of the experience of sexuality in women and couples and to reiterate the importance of the support of health professionals about the limitations of cancer in the experience of sexuality.
