Self-esteem and life satisfaction among Brazilian adolescents victimized and bullies

| dc.description.abstract | Abstract: Bullying is characterized by repeated physical or psychological intimidation, leading to harassment and abuse that can impact the well-being of both victims and perpetrators. This study investigated differences in self-esteem and life satisfaction among students who had been victims or bullies compared to those who had never experienced bullying, either as victims or aggressors. The study involved 194 adolescents, with an average age of 17.46 years (SD=1,26), from the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Bahia, Brazil. Four scales were used: the Bullying Victimization Scale, Bullying Behavior Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Global Life Satisfaction Scale. Results indicate that victims of verbal and relational bullying had lower life satisfaction than non-victims. Victims of relational bullying also had lower self-esteem compared to those who had never been victimized. Victims of verbal bullying showed a trend towards lower self-esteem compared to non-victims. Finally, relational bullies had lower life satisfaction than non-bullies. We concluded that bullying adversely affects the subjective well-being of both victims and perpetrators, underscoring the importance of addressing bullying behaviors among adolescents. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | Autoestima e satisfação de vida entre adolescentes brasileiros vitimizados e agressores de bullying Resumo: O bullying é caracterizado por intimidação física ou psicológica repetida, levando ao assédio e abuso que podem impactar o bem-estar tanto das vítimas quanto dos agressores. Este estudo investigou as diferenças na autoestima e na satisfação com a vida entre estudantes que foram vítimas ou agressores de bullying, em comparação com aqueles que nunca vivenciaram bullying, seja como vítimas ou agressores. O estudo envolveu 194 adolescentes, com idade média de 17,46 anos (DP=1,26), do Instituto Federal de Ciência e Tecnologia da Bahia, Brasil. Quatro escalas foram utilizadas: a Escala de Vitimização por Bullying, a Escala de Comportamento de Bullying, a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg e a Escala Global de Satisfação com a Vida. Os resultados indicam que vítimas de bullying verbal e relacional têm menor satisfação com a vida do que as não-vítimas. Vítimas de bullying relacional também apresentaram menor autoestima em comparação com aqueles que nunca foram vitimizados. Vítimas de bullying verbal mostraram uma tendência a ter menor autoestima em comparação com os não-vítimas. Finalmente, agressores relacionais apresentaram menor satisfação com a vida do que os não-agressores. Conclui-se que o bullying afeta negativamente o bem-estar subjetivo tanto das vítimas quanto dos agressores, destacando a importância de combater comportamentos de bullying entre os adolescentes. | pt_PT |
