ABSTRACT: Within the sports teams the players are in constant interaction with their teammates and coaches making decisions that show more or less tendency to cooperate. Additionally, players focus their goals on the task, seeking to improve their performance and develop their skills, or on the ego, wanting to demonstrate superiority over others. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between Cooperation, Goal Orientation and their impact on the Performance and the existence of a moderating effect of Goal Orientation on the relationship between cooperation and performance. For this purpose we conducted a study involving 146 male athletes from three different sports (Football, Handball, and Futsal) of the youth teams or amateur. The goal orientation was measured by the Portuguese version of the Task / Ego Orientation in Sports Questionnaire, Cooperation with the Sports Cooperation Questionnaire and Performance through our own instrument made by the research team and later validated for this sample. The results confirmed the hypothesis that Goal Orientation and Cooperation are associated positively and significantly with Performance, and that the hypothesis of a moderating effect by Goal Orientation on the relationship between Cooperation and Performance was rejected. In short, the results show a positive effect of Cooperation and Goal Orientation in Performance and the need to make new studies to evaluate other relationships between these variables.
