Abstract(s)
This study aims to identify the kinds of toys more used by children and to verify differences about gender and age of Brazilian and Portuguese children. The participants in the research included 259 Brazilian children and 172 Portuguese children. All of these children attended the first four years of elementary school and they are between 6 and 10 years old. Data were collected by a scale of toys designed specifically for this study. By analyzing the data some similarities could be found between these two samples about the characterization of toys. Boys of both samples demonstrated a predilection for the use of toys that require a more intense physical activity. The youngest children of the Brazilian sample showed to be more predisposed to use toys that promote and stimulate the motor and social development. In the Portuguese sample, in turn, significant differences in the use of toys among children from different school levels were not found.
