ABSTRACT: The overall goal of this study is to analyze the variables that predict the importance that the elderly population gives sexual activity in this period of life. The specific goal is to analyze quality of life and how the importance given to sex influences it, whereas gender is also a variable. The sample consists of 445 men and women aged over 65 years, not institutionalized. The instruments include a socio demographic questionnaire, the index of quality EUROHIS-QOL-8 life, SWLS scale Portuguese version assessing subjective well-being self-perceived, EADS scale to assess depression, PANAS scale (Positive Emotions and Negative Emotions) that evaluates the emotional component of subjective well-being and sexual health scale. The results show us that the variables gender, educational background, religion, Quality of Life, Satisfaction with Life and the Positive Emotions are significant predictors of the importance that seniors give to sex. For males only education and positive emotions are the predictors. For the female gender education, satisfaction with life, positive emotions and religion are significant predictors. After a comparative analysis between genders with regard to quality of life and importance given to sex, one can conclude that men have a better perception of quality of life than women and give more importance to sex than women do. The results suggest that the education and the positive emotions are common predictors for both genders in relation to importance given to sex in senior age.
