Abstract(s)
Several studies have shown the importance that traumatic experiences have to the self in the organization of life experiences, emphasizing that, when related to significate perceived experiences, those experiences may be vividly remembered after a long period of time, making them easily accessible, especially when linked to highly emotional events. This research aimed at exploring the relation between autobiographical memories of former political prisoners and the severity of prison conditions. The sample included 17 former portuguese political prisoners, between 63 and 97 years of age. A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, as well as the Autobiographical Memory Task and several clinical assessment instruments were applied - BDI, BSI, NMDAS and STAI-Y. The obtained results revealed the inexistence of overgenerality of autobiographical memory, with evocation of a greater number of specific memories compared to categoric and extended memories. A greater number of evocations to memories with a negative emotional value were found, while the observation of significant differences between latent period and different aspects of stimulus words did not occur. The total response time obtained higher values in the responses given to the stimulus words with negative emotional value. The categories of evoked events show a greater emphasis on subjects related to Disease, Prison and Social Relations, while confirming that events related to Prison both appear to be associated with words of negative, positive or neutral emotional value. Social support networks, with the subsequent development or re-establishment of affective ties, the incorporation of traumatic events, the development of coping strategies and the re-signification of life meaning, appear to be the possible supporters in compensating the negative effects of traumatic experiences and the promoters of some of the results obtained by the participants in this research.
