Abstract(s)
The present report arises from a supervised practice, as part of a Master in Early Years and Primary Education, taught at Escola Superior de Educadores de Infancia Maria Ulrich and Instituto Universitario Ciencias Psicologicas, Sociais e da Vida – Lisbon. The report presents a descriptive and reflexive analysis of an intervention developed during educational practice with a Year 1 classroom, integrated in a public school. The theme chosen at the end of supervised practice was “Contexts that promote Inter-personal and democratic relationships in KS1”. The practice was at a public school in the centre of Lisbon, with a highly heterogeneous student population in terms of ethnicity and levels of learning. During the supervised practice I had the idea of developing a project with a colleague – Carolina Baganha, with the purpose of creating a school newspaper with year 1 and 3 students. The main goal was to develop Citizenship Education in a democratic way, through team work between both classes. I wanted to raise the importance of working as a team, respecting others and relate to children’s rights. For the research project I opted for qualitative methodology, using direct and participant observation in order to collect data. I also did documentary analysis of activities proposals and student’s coursework during this project. Through readings and research in relation to the theme, I can highlight that working with ethnically heterogeneous groups of students with regards to developing principles for citizenship, engages reflection and creates space for action on the problems felt by each one, helping in this way to solve issues related to children’s rights and respect for one another.
