Abstract(s)
Neste trabalho, a autora
ABSTRACT: The most eficient methods of intervention in Pediatric Psychology are those that recognize the relevance of the charactheristics of children’s understanding of disease for the elaboration of both the explanations about medica1 procedures, and of the coping strategies. In this paper, the author considers the need to enlarge the emphasis on the understanding of the causality of disease, to a more enlarged and comprehensive focus on the processes of personal meaning about health and disease. The recognition of the primacy of meaning in its cognitive and emotional complexity, leads to the defi - nition of three guidelines for the design of interventions in Pediatric Psychology: I) recognition of the importance of the research on Developmental Psychopathology, mainly those about the consequences of the disease experience to child and family development; 2) emphasis on children’s significations about health and disease; 3) emphasis on parental significations about their children‘s disease, about the relations between health problems and child development, and about educacional problem solving and adherence to medica1 prescriptions. The relevance and consequences of theses three guideiines are discussed.
