Abstract(s)
Investigadora Portuguesa Ana Alexandra Carvalheira. A amostra, engloba 2824 participantes
Nórdicos, e no género masculino (independentemente do país).
seniores do género masculino.
ABSTRACT: Research into masturbation in ageing is limited, and the “taboos” still associated with older people and sexuality are a reality. With the progressive ageing of the population, it is necessary to contribute to a more in-depth knowledge of this stage of life. Therefore, this research aims to understand how the frequency of masturbation varies in older men and women in Portugal and in two Nordic countries. It also aims to identify the factors associated with the frequency of masturbation. This research was carried out using an existing database from a European study, funded by the Research Council of Norway, in which Portuguese researcher Ana Alexandra Carvalheira participated. The sample included 2824 participants aged 60-75, 13.3% from Portugal and 60.7% from the Nordic countries. The results show that the frequency of masturbation is higher in the Nordic countries and among men (regardless of country). In addition, all the sociodemographic factors, three of the items on attitudes towards sex and sexual satisfaction, were significantly associated with the frequency of masturbation in the Nordic countries in male seniors. The same factors were found to be associated with female seniors, with the exception of sociodemographic factors, where only age was significantly associated. In Portugal, only avoidance of sex was found to be significantly associated with frequency of masturbation in males.
