Introduction: Obesity and overweight have increased significantly, being harmful to an individual’s health. There is evidence that romantic relationships impact an individual’s health, so it becomes relevant to understand obesity/overweight while analysing a couple’s variables. Furthermore, the adopted health behaviours are affected by the marital communication variable. This study aims to understand how the marital communication pattern foretells the frequency at which couples approach obesity/overweight subjects in the relationship. Method: The sample has 37 couples (74 individuals) with an average age of 47,82 (SD = 12,77), that have been living together for a minimum of 12 months, where at least one of its members has obesity or overweight. The employed instruments were: Sociodemographic, lifestyle and health Questionnaire; Communication Pattern Questionnaire - Short Version (CPQ-SV), and to evaluate the frequency of discussion, the team developed a single-answer item. Results: Although there are significant differences between men and women in regards to PCN, the results obtained through APIM demonstrate how the marital communicational pattern does not foretell the frequency at which couples approach obesity/overweight subjects. Conclusion: Although the marital communication pattern does not foretell the frequency at which couples discuss obesity/excess weight subjects, other variables should be studied in the future, since there is a promising set of studies that look into couple’s variabilities regarding the comprehension of individuals’ health behaviour changes.
