Abstract(s)
Introdução: A paralisia do sono é caracterizada pela incapacidade
temporária do movimento ou da fala durante o sono ou ao acordar e parece ter
uma relação com níveis de ansiedade. O presente estudo tem como objetivo
explorar a relação entre os sintomas de ansiedade e a paralisia do sono em
estudantes universitários.
Método: A amostra foi composta por 206 participantes. Foi aplicado um
questionário sociodemográfico, um questionário de paralisia do sono e o
Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck.
Resultados: Os resultados evidenciam uma relação significativa entre
ansiedade e paralisia do sono. Estudantes universitários com níveis mais
elevados de ansiedade demonstraram maior ocorrência de episódios de paralisia
do sono. A posição supina durante o sono foi associada a este fenómeno,
corroborando estudos anteriores. O período de lançamento das notas, de exames
e de entrega de trabalhados mostrou-se estar relacionado à ocorrência de
episódios de paralisia do sono, podendo refletir a ansiedade experienciada nessa
fase. Embora não tenham sido encontradas diferenças significativas entre
aqueles com mais ou menos de cinco episódios de paralisia do sono, a situação
profissional poderá influenciar esta relação, principalmente em trabalhadores estudantes. Observou-se uma relação maior entre ansiedade e paralisia do sono
no género feminino.
Conclusão: Os resultados deste estudo sugerem uma relação significativa
entre a ansiedade e a ocorrência de paralisia do sono em estudantes
universitários. A compreensão desta relação pode contribuir para uma melhor
intervenção nos casos de paralisia do sono, passando pela redução dos níveis de
ansiedade e pela promoção do bem-estar dos indivíduos afetados.
ABSTRACT: Introduction: Sleep paralysis is characterized by a temporary inability to move or speak during sleep or upon waking and appears to be related to levels of anxiety. This present study aims to explore the relationship between anxiety symptoms and sleep paralysis in university students. Method: The sample consisted of 206 participants. A sociodemographic questionnaire, a sleep paralysis questionnaire, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were administered. Results: The findings highlight a significant relationship between anxiety and sleep paralysis. University students with higher levels of anxiety demonstrated a greater occurrence of sleep paralysis episodes. The supine sleeping position was associated with this phenomenon, corroborating previous studies. The period of grade release, exams, and assignment deadlines was found to be related to the occurrence of sleep paralysis episodes, possibly reflecting the anxiety experienced during this phase. Although no significant differences were found between those with fewer than five episodes of sleep paralysis and those with more, the individual's occupational situation might influence this relationship, especially among working students. A stronger relationship between anxiety and sleep paralysis was observed in the female gender. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest a significant relationship between anxiety and the occurrence of sleep paralysis in university students. Understanding this relationship could contribute to better intervention in cases of sleep paralysis, involving the reduction of anxiety levels and the promotion of well-being among affected individuals.
