ABSTRACT: Accepted studies on the subject suggest that middle age is associated with symptoms like reduction of the libido, erectile quality alterations/erectile dysfunction, nocturnal and morning erections diminished; alterations to the physical appearance like the reduction of the body mass, body hair reduction and increase in body fat (Buvat et al., 2010; Pimenta, 2003; Tajar et al., 2012; Wylie et al., 2010) One of the purposes of this study is to explain the general aspects of andropause and middle age, including sexual symptoms and appearance changes, as well as, possible associated factors. The symptoms of middle age survey, was applied to 156 men of at least 40 years old. This sample was intended to differentiate, middle-aged men, according to the presence of sexual symptoms (considering different health aspects, like the practice of physical exercise, body mass index (BMI), quality of life, health status, hormonal treatment and presence of psychological problems) and to develop a preliminary study of an instrument that evaluates middle-aged appearance. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to the appearance evaluation instrument which revealed the existence of 2 factors (Sat and Imp) and presented good psychometric indicators. However, these psychometric quality results should be confirmed for different samples. It was concluded that men with higher quality of life (QOL) are more satisfied with their appearance than men with a smaller QOL (p=0,037); also, men who practice physical exercise are more satisfied with their appearance (p <0,001) and present higher levels of global appearance (p=0,016) than men who donât.
