Abstract(s)
Assim como, quanto menor for
a comunicação familiar, maior seria a ideação suicida dos reclusos.
This study intent to highlight the effect that family functioning and maltreatment in childhood and youth have on self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in male prisoners. For this study, data were collected from 200 participants aged between 21 and 40, corresponding to male inmates in a prison in Lisbon. Participants were inquered to complete the following instruments: flexibility, cohesion and family communication assessment scale (FACES IV), childhood trauma questionnaire, self-injurious behavior inventory and suicidal ideation questionnaire. The results of this study demonstrated that the history of maltreatment is a eminent predictor of self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts practiced by the participants, and communication is a second predictor, but only of suicidal ideation. On the contrary, these results invalidate the proposal that cohesion and flexibility would be statistically significant in relation to self-injurious behavior, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Athwart these results, it is possible to imply that the bigger the history of maltreatment by the individuals, the greater the amount of self-injurious behavior, as well as the greater their suicidal ideation and suicide attempts made by them. Likewise, the lesser the family communication, the greater the suicidal ideation of inmates.
