Abstract(s)
This dissertation aims to study the role of adaptation in the extreme context of the Dakar Rally, and to investigate its relationship with cohesion, trust, performance, and adaptive performance. To do so, a mixed-methods methodology was used in which, first, questions were applied in the scope of the events and scales were applied to measure the variables under study. Subsequently, an interview was conducted to understand the context and the quantitative results. In addition, this is a study whose sample focus is the events reported by the participants, so the sample consists on a total of nine events. The quantitative results reveal the existence of a positive relationship between adaptation processes and adaptive performance, and that the remaining variables (e.g., cohesion, trust, and performance) are unrelated to adaptation processes. Furthermore, they indicate that adaptive performance is dependent on the category of the event described. Considering the qualitative results, these show that variables such as cohesion and trust are poorly present in the team. In general, these results call attention to the need for training with the purpose of optimizing the functioning and the relationship between team members and suggest that leadership can play an important role in facilitating the adaptation processes in this context.
