Abstract(s)

The orientations for activities – hedonic and eudaimonic – are a vehicle for promoting the individual's flourishing, as well as the satisfaction of basic psychological needs – autonomy, competence, and relationship (Huta, 2016; Deci & Ryan, 2010). The main goal of this investigation was to analyze which of the two motivational orientations best predicted each of the dimensions of flourishing. And, we tried to understand how this relationship is mediated by basic psychological needs in music practitioners. The participants were 446 musicians, aged between 18 and 75 years old, (M = 34%; SD = 14.5%), with 59.2% female and 40.8% male (n = 182). There were three instruments adapted and validated for this population were used, namely Hedonic and Eudaimonic Motives for Activities – Revised, PERMA-Profiler, and Basic Psychological Need Scale. The main results indicated that, only, the eudaimonic orientations showed to predict positive emotions, achievement, meaning, and general well-being – dimensions present in flourishing, in music practitioners. Furthermore, it was possible to identify the primary role of competence satisfaction, as a mediator, in the relationship between eudaimonic orientations and various dimensions of psychological flourishing, which fully mediated this relationship, in music practitioners.
