Abstract(s)
guerra civil. As pessoas refugiadas estão expostas a diversos desafios e stressores diários,
O presente estudo qualitativo explorou a exposição a
pessoal e profissional permitiram mitigar e relativizar as experiências negativas. Os
ABSTRACT: As a response to the intensified migration crisis in 2015, Portugal welcomed refugees from various countries, namely, national Syrians escaping civil war. Refugees are exposed to a diverse type of challenges and daily stressors, including microaggressions, during the post-migration period which may lead to significant psychological distress. This qualitative study explored the exposure to microaggressions and the impact on the mental health of 39 Syrian refugees, living in Portugal. Through thematic analysis, we were able to find: a) negative experiences, which included microaggressions and integration challenges; b) positive experiences that fostered personal and professional development; and c) experiences of duality and identity crisis due to the ambiguity of belonging and the cultural identity of the participants. The results suggest that, despite the negative impact of microaggressions on refugees’ mental health, social support and opportunities of personal and professional development positive integration helped to mitigate relativize negative experiences. The findings highlight the need to promote opportunities of inclusion that foster a sense of belonging of new communities arriving in host countries.
