ABSTRACT: Aim: Strength Model of Self-Control (Muraven & Baumeister, 2000; Muraven, Tice & Baumeister, 1998) encompasses a concept referred as self-regulatory difficulties. These difficulties are due to the inability of each to exercise control over their own responses. Is a concept little studied in general health behaviors, in part because of the absence of an instrument for the study of this concept in this kind of context. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the validation of the Portuguese version EXACTED - Exercise Against Conflicts, Temptations and Ego Depletion (Chamberland, Miquelon & Dumont, 2013), through the analysis of its psychometric properties. Method: The sample consisted of 190 individuals, practitioners (n = 132) and physical activity non-practitioners (n = 57) of both genders (F = 58.9%) aged 18 to 69 years (M = 28.94, SD = 10.366). Results: The total scale and each domain presented good internal consistency. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) confirmed the three-factor structure (Conflicts, Temptations and Ego Depletion), although with poorer adjustment quality indices than those obtained in the original study of the instrument, both for the total sample and for the sub-group of exercisers. As expected, there were significant differences between exercises and non-exercisers with regards to their regulatory difficulties. Furthermore, a higher difficulty in regulating exercise behavior was associated with lower levels of habit (automaticity). Conclusions: These results contribute to the validation of the Portuguese version of the EXACTED questionnaire, suggesting advantages in reshaping / removal of some items.
