Abstract(s)
The increasing importance of sexual expression among older people calls for a more comprehensive understanding of the process of sexual aging. The purpose of this study was to validate the Successful Sexual Aging Scale (SSAS; Štulhofer, 2025) for the Portuguese population. Using a convenience sample of 211 women and 100 men aged 60 + years (M_age=71.8; SD=9.1), we validated a 9-item measure of successful sexual aging. The confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) supported the 3-Dimensional SSAS, which reflects two internal processes (acceptance of and adaptation to aging-related changes) and one external process (opportunities for sexual expression). A good fit was obtained after an error covariance between two logically overlapping items. Measurement invariance of the SSAS was examined across partnered (n = 188) and non-partnered (n = 120) older adults using multi-group CFA. Configural and metric invariance were supported, indicating that the scale assesses the construct similarly across groups at these levels. However, scalar invariance was not established, suggesting that the SSAS does not measure the construct identically in both groups. This implies that direct comparison of SSAS scores between partnered and non-partnered individuals may not be appropriate. Overall, the SSAS Portuguese version showed good psychometric properties and can be considered a valid instrument for assessing successful aging in the Portuguese older adult population.
