Abstract(s)
envelhecimento. Recorrendo à plataforma on-line (https://www.surveymonkey.com/) e a
constituída por 444 participantes (N=444), com idade superior a 62 anos (M=72.25; SD=6.32;
Sexual, Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin, 1985);
Positive and Negative Affect Shuedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988).
ABSTRACT: The significant increase in life expectancy and aging population accentuates the need to rethink the way we have been dealing with these issues. Sexuality, in this age group has been one of the most neglected issues around the world, particularly in Portugal, where literature is scarce. This aims to investigate the predictive factors of importance given to sexuality in aging. Using the online platform (https://www.surveymonkey.com/) and several institutions offering social response to the senior population, we obtained a sample of 444 participants (N = 444), older than 62 years (M = 72.25; SD = 6.32; [62-92]), of which 302 (68%) were female and 142 (32%) were male. The instruments used were the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Sexual Health Questionnaire, Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS; Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin, 1985) e Positive and Negative Affect Shuedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark and Tellegen, 1988). The results show marital status, religious practice, qualifications, life satisfaction, positive affect, level of sexual activity throughout life and satisfaction with this level as predictors of assigned sexuality importance at this stage of life. There are significant differences among both sexes, regarding the importance of the sexual relationship, being that men give more emphasis to it when compared to women. It is intended that this contributed to the clarification, demystifying and promoting changes in the way this issue is currently perceived.
