Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This dissertation comprises a study of extra therapeutic factors as they pertain to intellectual and artistic works. It is based on the songs of protest written by Chico Buarque between 1964 and 1985, a period marked by a military dictatorship in Brazil. The interpretive analysis that follows is situated in psychoanalytical theory, specifically in the theoretical discourse engendered by Freud’s “Die Traumdeutung”. This study seeks to establish the nexus of Freud’s notion of dream-work and the artfulness of Chico Buarque in circumventing the censorship of the totalitarian regime, postulating that the creative processes lend themselves to this analogy.
