Background: Man's behavior in the face of death, his own and those around him, is the result of a long evolutionary process. Contrary to the scientific and biological conception of death, religion arises as a promise of a new beginning. Objective: To study the impact of the Catholic religion on the grieving process. Method: Qualitative, cross-sectional study based on the descriptive phenomenological method. The sample consisted of 8 participants: 4 practicing Catholic individuals and 4 atheist individuals, 3 men and 5 women aged 28 to 62 years. Results: All participants report the experience of grief as painful, regardless of religious practices and beliefs. However, participants with religious beliefs show greater acceptance of death, related to the hope of a new meeting. Conclusion: The results of this study were consistent with the literature, as it proves that religion moderates the impact of death and, consequently, mourning, as it offers the hope of a new beginning and reunion.
