Os instrumentos administrados foram o Questionário Sociodemográfico, Hypoglycemia Fear Survey - Parents, The Problem Areas in Diabetes Survey – Parent Revised Version e o Emotion Regulation Questionnaire.
Considering the worrying increase in the number of children and adolescents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes; the difficulties faced by parents who are the main caregivers; the emotional distress associated with having a child with this condition; and the exhausting demands of its daily management, this study aims to understand the influence of Fear of Hypoglycemia on the relationship between Emotion Regulation and Diabetes Distress in these parents. The study involved 102 parents (92.2% mothers and 7.8% fathers) aged between 32 and 58 years, with children aged between 8 and 17 years. The instruments administered were the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey - Parents, the Problem Areas in Diabetes Survey – Parent Revised Version and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Four mediation models were tested: two using Cognitive Reappraisal as the Emotion Regulation strategy and two using Expressive Suppression. Only the Worry subscale of the Fear of Hypoglycemia was found to mediate the association between Cognitive Reappraisal and Diabetes Distress. The results of this study make a significant contribution to clinical practice and future interventions targeting these parents, and open pathways for new studies to explore these or other variables, with the aim of reducing levels of Diabetes Distress and Fear of Hypoglycemia so prevalent in these parents, as well as enhancing their Emotion Regulation capacity.
