Abstract(s)
Abstract: Psychological Needs have played a key role in Psychological Well-being research. The Paradigmatic Complementarity Model suggests that Well-being results from the regulation of seven pairs of dialectical Psychological Needs, including Relatedness and Autonomy. In turn, this regulation is accomplished through a continuous process of negotiation and balancing of each dialectical pair. This study intended to create a Needs Satisfaction Regulation Scale – Relatedness/Autonomy (NSRS-R/A) that assessed both needs’ regulation degree and to understand its association with Psychological Well-Being and Distress, who were both measured by the Portuguese version of the Mental Health Inventory. Both instruments were applied to 237 subjects through a web platform. As expected, results suggest good reliability for the NSRS-R/A. Furthermore, results indicate a significant positive association between Psychological Well-being and both needs’ regulation degree. Psychological Distress, on the other hand, presents a significant negative association with both needs. By comparing four groups with different needs’ regulation levels, significant differences were found concerning Psychological Well-being and Distress. Study constraints as well as clinical and psychotherapeutic implications and further research suggestions are presented.
