| dc.description.abstract | Embora de forma sucinta foram abordados neste texto uma série de questões relativas ao envolvimento paterno nos cuidados da criança. Como já referimos, o intenso interesse actual da parte de académicos e investigadores pelos papéis e funções paternas, reflecte as últimas de uma série de mudanças na forma como a sociedade Norte-Americana conceptualiza e idealiza a paternidade. O nível médio de envolvimento paterno aumentou nos últimos anos, de forma compatível com a noção de «nova paternidade», embora o aumento tenha sido modesto. As mães continuam a dedicar mais tempo do que os pais a interacção ou disponibilidade para os filhos e, isto mantem-se mesmo quando ambos os progenitores estão empregados. Para além disso, a responsabilidade em última análise pelos cuidados e educação da criança mantem-se no domínio quase exclusivo das mães, enquanto que os pais «ajudam quando podem (ou quando é conveniente))). Vários factores, incluindo a motivação, competências e auto-confiança, o apoio e factores institucionais, parecem afectar os níveis de envolvimento paterno, mas muitos deles parecem reflectir manifestações dum outro pressuposto: os homens são primordialmente e fundamentalmente trabalhadores e fonte de rendimento, as mulheres são essencialmente educadoras. Qualquer que seja o nível de envolvimento, os pais parecem de facto influenciar o desenvolvimento dos filhos tanto directamente, através da interacção, como indirectamente, devido ao seu impacto (positivo ou negativo) no clima sócio-emocional da família. As atitudes quanto aos níveis adequados de envolvimento paterno variam lagarmente. O envolvimento paterno, quer de nível elevado quer de nível baixo, pode ser benéfico ou prejudicial para o desenvolvimento da criança consoante as atitudes e valores dos pais em questão. Assim, é de máxima importância reconhecer a diversidade intercultural e intracultural quando exploramos as influências paternas no desenvolvimento da criança. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: A number of issues pertaining to paternal involvement in child care have been adressed, albeit briefly, in this article. As mentioned earlier, the current high degree of interest in paternal roles and functions on the part of scholars and researchers reflects the latest in a series of shifts in the way in which American society conceptualizes and idealizes fatherhood. Consistent with the notion of a mew fatherhood)), the average level of paternal involvement has increased in the last severa1 years, although the increase has been modest. Mothers still spend much more time than do fathers in interaction with or accessibility to their children, and this remains true even when both parents are employed. Furthermore, ultimate responsabiiity for child care and chiid rearing remains the near-exclusive province of mothers, while fathers «help out when they can (or when it is convenient)». A number of factors, including motivation, skills and self-confidence, support, and institutional factors, appear to affect levels of parent involvement, but many of these reflect manifestations of an underlying assumption: Men are first and foremost workers and breadwinners, women are primarily nurturers. Whatever the extent of their involvement, fathers do appear to influence their children’s development, both directly by means of interaction and indirectly by virtue of their impact (positive and negative) on their family’s social and emotional ciimate. Attitudes concerning appropriate levels of paternal involvement vary widely. Thus, paternal involvement, whether of a high or low level, can be beneficia1 or harmful to child development, depending on the attitudes and values of the parents concerned. It is thus critically important to recognize intercultural and intracultural diversity when exploring paternal influences on the child development. | por |
