Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Moral disengagement is a cognitive process that allows individuals to justify actions that go against their moral values, which in turn can facilitate deviant behaviour. The present study aims to investigate whether there are differences between the levels of moral disengagement of inmates according to the number of friends who have been in prison. The sample of this study consists of 411 male inmates, aged between 19 and 83 years (M = 38.33, SD = 10.95). In addition to assessing the number of friends involved with the justice system, the Civic Moral Disengagement (CMD) Scale was administered to evaluate moral disengagement (Caprara et al., 2009; Almeida & Basto-Pereira, 2019). The results indicate that inmates who have more friends who have been or are in prison show higher levels of moral disengagement compared to inmates who have fewer or no friends in prison. The results highlight the relevance of affiliation with deviant peers on levels of moral disengagement of inmates, with critical implications for crime prevention and reducing recidivism. Evaluations that consider social networks interventions for at-risk youth appear to be essential for reducing recidivism and promoting effective social reintegration.
