This dissertation aims to explore the effects of music therapy on elderly people with dementia as a way to access aspects of their personal, emotional, and relational experience. Although there is already a lot of literature on the beneficial effects of music therapy in this population, most of it is only based on reports from formal and informal caregivers, and on specific variables related to their experience. Therefore, we sought a more comprehensive and exploratory approach, without predefined variables, focusing on aspects that naturally emerge as an integral part of their therapeutic process. Using a qualitative approach, seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with a music therapist, an older adult without dementia from the group, caregivers, and family members, enriched by five observation sessions with institutionalized older adults with dementia. The interviews were conducted in person and remotely, lasting an average of 40 minutes, and the observation sessions lasted 45 minutes. Subsequently, Thematic Analysis was used for the interviews, Content Analysis for the observation sessions, and Convergent Analysis, which allowed triangulation of the data obtained from both sources. This research project complies with the guidelines approved by the institution's ethics committee, and informed consent and sociodemographic data were obtained from all participants, including the institutionÂŽs director (responsible for the elderly). The data obtained were consistent with existing literature, revealing that although the effects of music therapy in this population are essentially transient, they are therapeutically relevant, given the possibility of fostering moments of presence, connection, and emotional expression. It was also found that the use of Portuguese popular music favors connection with the elderly's personal and cultural identity, as well as their emotional regulation.
