Abstract(s)
Método: A amostra é composta
ABSTRACT: With the appearance of an illness in the family environment, the quality of the relationship between the informal caregiver and the patient may change as a result of involvement in the provision of care. These changes can be positive, creating closeness between the two, however, they can also be likely to cause conflict. To date, there is no instrument that allows the assessment of changes in the quality of the informal caregiver relationship resulting from illness. Objective: The present study aims to develop and validate the Quality Scale of the Relationship between Informal Caregiver and Patient - Before and After Illness (EQR). Method: The sample is composed of caregivers of sick family members monitored in palliative care. Data were collected using the EQR. Additionally, a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire and three self-report instruments were administered: Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI); Caregiver Burden Scale; and the Prolonged Grief Disorder Pre-Death (PG-12). An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was carried out, which focused on the two subscales of the EQR: “Before the Illness” and “After the Illness”. Results: The sample consisted of 139 subjects, mostly female (82.0%) and “Son” (56.8%), with a mean age of 51.73 years (SD 13.40). The two EQR subscales revealed to have a bifactorial structure, corresponding to the dimensions “Closeness” and “Conflict”. Internal consistency values are acceptable in the two subscales “Before the Illness” (α= .77) and “After the Illness” (α= .75). A moderate correlation was found between the conflict factor of the EQR in the “After, in Illness” version and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale; such as the closeness factor of the EQR in the “After the Illness” version and the PG-12, demonstrating evidence of convergent validity. The results also showed no correlation between the EQR closeness factor and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale; and the conflict factor of the EQR with the PG-12, proving the evidence of divergent validity. Discussion: The Quality Scale of the Relationship between Informal Caregiver and Patient - Before and After Illness proved to be consistent, valid and reliable, enabling the assessment of possible relational changes resulting from the provision of care in the context of advanced illness.
