Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Andropause is a process characterized by a gradual decrease in testosterone levels that can adversely affect physical and mental health, affecting numerous areas of man’s life. The main objective of the present study was to explore the impact of andropausal symptoms on relational and sexual satisfaction, and on male self-image. This research involved a total of 128 participants with 40 or more years (M = 52.9; DP = 9.1), who completed the EVISA research protocol (Life Experiences | Health in Adulthood). The results did not demonstrate a significant association between sexual symptoms of andropause and relational satisfaction, or between sexual symptoms of andropause and the importance given to self-image. However, there was a positive association between sexual satisfaction and satisfaction with self-image in adult men. In this study it was also found that men with 60 or more years reported greater severity of sexual symptoms than men under 60 years, as well as men between 40 and 49 years that had greater sexual satisfaction than men with 60 or more years. Other results corroborate the literature, such as the case of two-dimensional self-image evaluated in this study, since there were no differences between the importance and satisfaction with self-image across different age groups. Therefore it is suggested that further studies evaluating the relational satisfaction with both elements of the dyad.
