Abstract(s)
As
ABSTRACT: Managing obesity (OB) and successful weight loss (SWL) entails dealing with barriers and resources. The present study aims to investigate factors associated with the maintenance of the excessive weight in people who currently have OB and people who have done a SWL. Thirty men and women, with a SWL (n=15; loss of a minimum of 7% of initial weight and maintained for at least 12 months) or with OB (n=15; BMI>30kg/m2), were interviewed regarding factors associated with weight gain (SWL and OB sample) and factors associated to the excessive weight maintenance in the past (SWL sample) or in the present (OB sample). The content of the transcribed; interviews were subjected to content and thematic analysis by a jury of two psychologists. In the SWL sample, the existence of psychological problems such as anxiety and depression were highlighted at the beginning of the excessive weight and the existence of negative emotions as a factor that contributed to the maintenance of this weight. In the OB sample, a lack of exercise has been shown as a factor that contributed to the beginning of obesity, and an unbalanced diet as a factor that helped to maintain the excessive weight. However, both subsamples have common categories. It follows that the factors found are varied in nature, and most are personal factors, focusing on physical inactivity and negative emotions. The inclusion of both sexes in both samples and analyzing recorded interviews made in depth are advantages to the potential contribution of this study.
