Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The Portuguese Maritime Police officers (PMP), who are part of the first responders category, are involved in the rescue missions of displaced people and are cumulatively exposed to potentially traumatic events that could create psychological distress. Religion, as a meaning system, provides a set of rules that inform behaviour, gives meaning to extreme events and contributes to the psychological adjustment to trauma in religious individuals. The present qualitative study, based on the Meaning-Making model by Park (2010), explored the role of religion in the meaning-making processes of 30 PMP officers who took part in rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea. Through thematic analysis, we identified four themes related to: questioning religion; attributing responsibility for the traumatic events to the human being; mission’s spirit being informed by religion; and the acceptance processes being influenced by religion. The results suggest that religion has an implicit role in the psychological function of the officers, informing their behaviour, thoughts and values within the professional environment. Religion also takes part in the acceptance processes of the potentially traumatic events observed during the rescue missions of displaced people.
