Abstract(s)
quanto maior for o estigma internalizado sentido pelos indivíduos LGBT+, maior é o
This study aims to assess the impact of stigma on life aspirations (parenthood, marriage, career, economic success, friendship and life connections) of LGBTQ+ individuals, assuming a comparison with heterosexual and cisgender individuals. For this, a quantitative methodology was used. The sample is composed of 612 heterosexual and cisgender individuals and 213 LGBT+ individuals, aged between 17 and 73 years (M=36.70, SD=13.31), having been collected online. Three instruments were used, namely, the collection of sociodemographic data, the questionnaire on the assessment of aspirations and the stigma scale related to homosexuality. The results allowed us to conclude that LGBT+ participants very much want to fulfill their aspirations, more than they expect to achieve them in the future, as they have less opportunities, more limitations and challenges demanded by society, and also by their own fears and constant concern for if they feel discriminated against. It was possible to verify that internalized stigma appears as a predictor variable in most of the gaps between desire and expectation, since personal beliefs are determinant and influence decision-making on a given goal, so the greater the internalized stigma felt by LGBT+ individuals, the greater the gap to fulfill the aspirations under study. The present study contributed to the scarce literature on the influence of stigma on decision-making to fulfill a certain life aspiration and to the previously elaborated studies on the desires and expectations of achieving aspirations in sexual minorities, such as LGBT+.
