Abstract(s)
A definição de imagem corporal proposta por Cash (2002b) salienta a multidimensionalidade do conceito,
englobando elementos perceptivos e atitudinais. A dimensão atitudinal inclui a avaliação e
No presente
Revisto – The Appearance Schemas Inventory – Revised [ASI-R] (Cash, Melnyk, & Hrabosky, 2004), que
original do questionário.
ABSTRACT: Cash’s (2002b) definition of body image underlines its multidimensionality, as it contains perceptual and attitudinal elements. The attitudinal dimension includes body evaluation and satisfaction, as well as beliefs about appearance. This cognitive component relates to one’s investment in appearance, that is, the cognitive, behavioral and emotional importance of body image in one’s life. In the present investigation, we conducted the psychometric studies of The Appearance Schemas Inventory - Revised [ASI-R] (Cash, Melnyk, & Hrabosky, 2004), a questionnaire that aims to assess the two facets of schematic investment in appearance: self-evaluative and motivational salience of appearance. A sample consisting of 226 adults answered the Portuguese version of the scale, which showed adequate levels of reliability and validity. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted, and the fit indexes support the original model. Therefore, the Portuguese version is an effective measure of personal beliefs about appearance. There were significant gender differences in both facets, and also in the instrument’s global score, with females presenting higher results in all these dimensions.
