Abstract(s)
feminino (67.7%) e 51 do masculino (32.3%).
ABSTRACT: The psychoanalytic theories of object relations postulate that early emotional relationships, with a particular focus on the mother, form the basis for the development of lifelong relationships. Research in this area has not explored how the internalized relationship with the maternal object may impact the experience of sibling rivalry. This current research aims to investigate how the nature and quality of the relationship with the maternal object, as well as the characteristics of the fraternal system, influence sibling rivalry from the perspective of the offspring. This mixed-method empirical study began with data collection using the QRIA (Coutinho & Duarte, 2008), involving 158 participants from 18 and 63 years old, 107 females (67.7%) and 51 males (32.3%). In the second phase, the Free Association Narratives Method (Hollway & Jefferson, 2000) was employed to access the subjective and unconscious experiences of three subjects. The QRIA results do not show significant differences between sibling characteristics and the level of sibling rivalry. The narratives from the three subjects highlight the relationship with the maternal object characterized by ambivalence, insecurity and emotional deprivation, which hinder the internalization of a secure internal object. The three subjects associate the distress and relational difficulties with the mother with their experience of sibling rivalry.
