- Voices of recovery: Exploring the therapeutic experiences of adult women with a history of nonsuicidal self-injuryPublication . Rebelo, Maria de Lancastre Montanha; Duarte, EvaNon-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the behavior in which one purposely hurts oneself without the intent of dying, resulting in physical damage to the body. Psychological support for NSSI is crucial for its reduction and cessation. However, research has shown that patients who engage in psychological support report therapeutic experiences in which they felt judged, ignored, misunderstood or disregarded by mental health professionals, leading to increased dropouts and further self-harm engagement. Thus, it is important to understand these experiences and to explore its impact on their self-harm behavior and emotional well-being. Objective: The present study aimed to explore how adult women with a history of NSSI perceive their experiences with psychological support, focusing on its impact on their NSSI and emotional well-being. Methods: To do this, a series of semi-directive interviews were conducted to 11 adult women, between the ages of 25 and 60 years old (31.1), who had previously engaged in psychological support in Portugal, and had a history of NSSI. Results: Through content analysis, results revealed that psychological support is crucial for reducing NSSI in which a positive therapeutic relationship as well as the strategies and tools used were considered vital for managing their NSSI. However, certain difficulties within the therapeutic relationship, like perceived stigma and judgement from the mental health professionals, were significant hurdles for the course of intervention and ultimately increased dropout behavior. Conclusion: This study offers key insights for clinical practice underlining the need for tailored and empathic psychological interventions for adult women with a history of NSSI.
