- A parenthood story told in the third person – a study on society views regarding different gender parents who show signs of postpartum depressionPublication . Neves, Sofia Nunes da Costa Moreira; Almeida, Telma Sofia de SousaABSTRACT: The following study unfolds as an attempt to analyze possible differences in levels of Empathy and Censure towards parents who show signs of Postpartum Depression, based on their gender, as well it intends to analyse factors that may justify the attribution of Empathy and Censure in these cases, such as marital beliefs, gender or age of the participant. As it is known, mental health develops as a continuous thread throughout the whole life of a person, and so, anyone can develop a mental health disorder through the course of their life. Parents are no exception, in fact, there is a high prevalence and probability of a development of mental health disorders in new parents. Empathy and Censure towards these individuals may represent a significant difference between feeling that they have a good social support and may enable the openness to psychological treatment. The results found that the attribution of Empathy and Censure did differ according to the gender of the affected parent, with higher levels of Empathy towards women, and a higher level of Censure when both parents (mom and dad) showed Symptoms of PPD, followed by then higher levels of Censure towards men compared to women. It was also found that marital beliefs did not predict the levels of Empathy and Censure attributed and neither did the age of the participants.
