- Conservation perspectives of the franciscana dolphin Pontoporia blainvillei ) in Brazilian waters. A case study of Francisca , a juvenile female undergoingPublication . Leandro, Beatriz dos Reis; Santos, Manuel Eduardo dosEnvironmental Enrichment (EE) is a dynamic process aimed at promoting animal welfare by altering and adding elements to their environment. The first part of this dissertation presents a case study of a franciscana ( Pontoporia blainvillei) undergoing rehabilitation at the R3 Animal Association, representing to date the longest recorded successful rehabilitation of this species. Zoomarine collabor ated with Yaqu Pacha and R3 Animal in the rehabilitation process by applying behavioral modification and EE techniques. An individualized EE plan was implemented with the general objective of stimulating natural behaviors, facilitating adaptation to a semi wild environment, and reducing human contact. The second part of this project describes the conservation perspectives of the franciscana. This species, classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, faces significant conservation challenges, mainly due to its high susceptibility to bycatch in gillnets, which is the primary cause of mortality and population fragmentation. Future perspectives highlight the need to imrove population monitoring, expand research on the effects of contaminants and noise on the franciscana s behavior and physiology, and develop policies that promote sustainable fishing in the species’ range and reduce anthropogenic impacts in coastal environments. The double aim of this dissertation is to deepen the understanding of franciscana c onservation and reinforce the importance of implementing EE practices in rehabilitation contexts.
