- COVID-19 lockdown and social isolation impact on the ability to place events in timePublication . Ferreira, Ana Rita Ribeiro; Lemos, RaquelThe COVID-19 pandemic disrupted people’s lives forcing the Portuguese population to stay home and forced them into social isolation. This resulted in a long period of time where we were forced into routine, boredom, and sameness. Studies conducted during the COVID-19 lockdowns revealed that this impacted people’s time awareness and perception in various ways. The goal of this research was to find if this phenomenon had any long-lasting impact on time perception, specifically in time memory (i.e., the ability to place events in time). A 30-item questionnaire was created, wherein each item the participant had to place a notable event in time (from 2018 to 2022). The goal was to compare the scores between participants who experienced different lockdown durations (i.e., no lockdown and short lockdown vs. long lockdown periods), and to assert if the lockdown experience influenced the time memory ability. The results of this research were inconclusive, as no significant differences were found between conditions. However, the results also showed that, overall, participants had more difficulty placing 2020 and 2021 events in time than 2018 events, suggesting a potential long-term time disorientation that could be attributable to the COVID-19 restrictions.
