- Demographic parameters of black-browed albatrosses Thalassarche melanophris from the Falkland IslandsPublication . Catry, Paulo; Forcada, Jaume; Almeida, Ana PereiraBlack-browed albatrosses Thalassarche melanophris are currently classified as globally endangered. The most important populations of this species are believed to be declining due to, amongst other factors, unsustainable levels of incidental mortality in fishing gear. However, detailed demographic data are lacking for several critical populations, including the largest of all, nesting in the Falkland Islands. Here, we present data from the first Falkland Islands detailed demographic study (at New Island) and show that, from 2003 to 2009, the mean adult survival probability was 0.942 (95% CI: 0.930–0.952). Nesting frequency of adults is amongst the highest recorded for Thalassarche albatrosses and breeding success (0.564 chicks per egg) is within normal values. The nesting population in the intensively studied plots experienced an increase of 4% per year from 2004 to 2009. These results indicate that the Falklands population may not be as threatened as previously supposed, although studies from more sites and a longer time series are needed to confirm or refute this. The high survival rates may partly reflect recent efforts to mitigate bycatch made by the Falkland Islands and other fisheries in the region. The reinforcement of such initiatives may be critical to buffer the black-browed albatross population against ecosystem shifts and natural disasters (such as harmful algal blooms) that will likely become more frequent with ongoing global changes.

Demographic studies at the largest known colony of this taxon revealed a sharp population decline (47%) in just 5 years, between 2004 and 2009. The decline seems to be linked with a chronic low breeding success in the recent years and is consistent with a situation of virtually zero recruitment. The ultimate causes of the decline are, as of yet, unknown, but plausible explanations are examined and discussed. The reported population trends should be the cause of some concern, and more research and monitoring are desired.
- Predatory pelagic fishes of the Bijagós Archipelago (Guinea-Bissau) show high overlap in diets dominated by sardinellaPublication . Correia, Edna; Granadeiro, José Pedro; Regalla, Aissa Said; Dias, Emanuel; Almeida, Ana Pereira; Catry, PauloKnowledge of trophic interactions between the key components of marine communities is required to understand food-web dynamics and develop ecosystem-based management approaches. In West Africa, where fisheries sustain the livelihoods of a significant part of the human population, this understanding is even more urgent, especially in the face of rapidly expanding fisheries and some stock collapses in the region. We studied the feeding ecology of the Crevalle jack Caranx hippos, West African Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus tritor and Guinean barracuda Sphyraena afra in the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau. These are the most abundant pelagic predatory teleost fishes in the area, but little is known about their ecology despite being species with commercial and recreational value, and they likely also play an important role in various African coastal ecosystems. Our findings show a high degree of dietary overlap among these three predator species, despite some degree of segregation by prey size and type. All three predators depend on Sardinella maderensis as the most important prey, which together with other members of the Clupeidae represented 47–96% of the ingested prey items. There was little difference in the diets of the predators between the dry and rainy seasons. These novel findings suggest a ‘wasp-waist’-structured ecosystem in the Bijagós Archipelago in which S. maderensis is the central small-sized pelagic fish species, and stress the need for an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management in the region, with precautionary measures taken to avoid the overexploitation of clupeids.
- Temporal and age-related dietary variations in a large population of yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis : Implications for management and conservationPublication . Alonso, Hany Rafael de Drummond Ludovice Garcia; Almeida, Ana Pereira; Granadeiro, José Pedro; Catry, PauloThere was an extraordinary increase in the numbers of European gulls during the twentieth century which has been linked to higher availability of food derived from human activities. At Berlenga island (Portugal), the population of yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis increased from 2600 individuals to a peak of 44,698 gulls (1974–1994), after which control measures have been put in place. Despite the management effort, little is known about the feeding ecology of this population. To investigate temporal and age-related variations in the diet of yellow-legged gulls at Berlenga, 1668 adult pellets and 145 chick regurgitates were collected and analysed between 2009 and 2012. Contradicting the generally accepted idea that these birds depend mainly on human-related food, adult gulls relied substantially on a locally abundant natural prey, the Henslow’s swimming crab Polybius henslowii. Nevertheless, large amounts of refuse and fish were consumed in periods of apparent lower availability of swimming crabs. Despite the large temporal shifts in diet and feeding areas (change from marine to terrestrial prey), adult gulls consistently provisioned their chicks with a fish-based diet and chick condition remained constant. These results not only highlight the great resilience of this population to changes in food availability but also indicate that food from different human activities remain highly accessible. With the implementation of recent EU legislation regarding the reduction of fishery discards, and the increase of urban populations in the mainland, the monitoring and appropriate management of gull populations will be decisive for the healthy conservation of coastal systems used by these gulls.
